Hip-Hop
A cultural movement. It began among urban African Americans and Latinos in the Bronx at about 1974. It has since spread across the world and has become a dominant force in popular culture. 3 elements are breakdancing, rapping, and graffiti writing. However, Hip-Hop contains other elements including fashion, double dutch jump rope, and political activism.
Rap Music
primary musical ingredient in Hip-Hop culture it developed in 1974 in the Bronx.
Afro-Diaspora
People that left Africa by choice of by force and to their descendants. From the 15th century to the 19th century, many Africans were brought by the slave trade to others places including South America, the Caribbean, North America, and Europe where their descendents live today. This term is important because rap music draws on many musical and cultural elements from the Afro Diaspora and has become an important force within the Afro Diaspora today.
Rhythm
Rhythm is all time based events in music. All music has rhythm. Rhythm is how it’s different notes and sections are timed relative to one another.
Beat
Regular pulse in music. If you could clap along to a piece of music it has a beat.
Pitch
refers to frequency of a musical note. They could be high or low.
Harmony and Melody
when two pitches happen at the same time. If you play the two pitches one after another you get melody.
Groove
is a layered rhythmic pattern.
Break
Used by Jazz musicians. The band would pause allowing the soloist to play unaccompanied for a few seconds.
Form
